10 modern comedy movies perfect for Goonies fans

The Goonies are a 1980s classic that has stood the test of time, remaining just as popular today as it was when it was originally released. It’s a pop culture classic, with people still citing lines from the film to this day, and hilarious moments unfold throughout.

While there were several other great movies around the same time that had a similar feel to this, there are also plenty of modern options for people to appreciate that fans of. The Goonies I would appreciate it. Whether it’s adventure or brilliant comedy, there are plenty of newer movies out there that will feel like this classic.

While this movie features adult characters for most of the movie (because they’re actually teenagers trapped in adult bodies), the energy and dialogue feel very familiar to him. The Goonies. Jumanji takes place in a video game world after the main characters have been sucked in and the group must work together to escape and return to normal life.

It offers a similar sense of adventure, which is a huge part of The Goonies Success. However, it’s the characters’ arguments and the way their virtual bodies are completely different from their real selves that make this a really fun movie with a modern twist, thanks to the video game aspect.

9 Onward (2020)


Forward is one of Pixar’s most recent films and it takes place in a magical world where two brothers, Ian and Barley, must race against time to find a gem that will allow them to bring their late father back for just one day. Of course, this turns into a huge adventure with a lot of ups and downs and explores their personal relationship along the way.

As with any Pixar movie, it’s packed with great comedic moments that will make audiences laugh, but it also brings a lot of emotion. The Goonies provides a great sense of oneness, which is something that Forward does well too.

8 Kings of Summer (2013)

A little like The Goonies, this movie has a group of friends who have to work together, this time it’s during the summer when they go together to try and make a living off the land by building a house in the woods, creating their own personal adventure. As the characters here leave their families due to issues at home, when they go out into the wild, the movie gets lighter.

The three teenagers are there for fun and adventure, and their friendship is something that really carries the film throughout the film. They have a fun relationship and the comedy that unfolds throughout is something that fans of. The Goonies are sure to appreciate.

7 Paper Cities (2015)

While Paper cities is technically a romantic movie, there is a lot of comedy throughout which makes it quite funny for fans of The Goonies appreciate. There is also a real adventure in the film, as Margo leaves clues for Quentin to find her.

He gets a group of friends to help him out, and this aspect is something that creates a vibe similar to The Goonies. While they’re not looking for treasure here, it’s still a great adventure and the mystery aspect of the film is entertaining.

6 Holes (2003)

A little like The Goonies, Holes thrives by bringing together a group of children who are outcasts, as they are in a detention camp because of their behavior. Their punishment is digging holes every day, and that’s because those in charge are looking for treasure, but don’t actually want to do the job themselves.

The main character, Stanley, played by Shia LaBeouf, seeks to expose those responsible. The movie doesn’t have as much adventure as The Goonies, but there are some fantastic young characters who are confident and that leads to similarities between the movies.

5 Super 8 (2011)

After a train crash in a small town, things start to get very strange, which leads a group of young friends to take it upon themselves to investigate what happened. The group has excellent chemistry, just like in The Goonies, and seeing them trying to find out what’s going on is a lot of fun.

While this movie lends itself to sci-fi at times, it’s just a different storytelling device than The Goonies. There’s just as much fun to be had here, with elements of mystery and adventure making the movie gripping, while it’s the personalities of the characters that make it really enjoyable.

4 Son of Rambow (2007)

This movie is perfect for any fan of The Goonies, and although it’s modern, it’s also set in the ’80s, giving a similar feel to classic comedy. The film sees two young boys become friends, and despite the fact that their origins are completely different, they take inspiration from the film, First blood.

They decide to film their own version, which sees them heading into the woods for a real adventure as they try to edit the film. There’s comedy, heart, and a fantastic bond between the two young characters that make for a truly lovely story.

3 Pan (2015)

There have been a lot of movies based on the Peter Pan story, and the 2015 version, Pan, is certainly one of the most unique. He focuses on a young version of the character, watching how he ends up in Neverland and shows him learning his true destiny.

There is a lot of comedy in the movie which is to be expected with any movie starring Peter Pan because he’s a fun character. Corn Pan also brings a lot of adventures, which makes it something that The Goonies fans will love to watch.

2 Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

The Goonies sees the main characters looking for treasure, so a real pirate movie is probably something fans will enjoy watching. Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl is the strongest movie in the franchise and it sees Will Turner team up with the infamous Captain Jack Sparrow to save the love of his life.

Of course, this movie has a lot of swashbuckling action, with great sword fighting and brilliant villains among the undead pirates. However, it’s also a hilarious movie, with Jack Sparrow being an extremely charismatic character.

1 Finding Ohana (2021)

Find Ohana is one of Netflix’s newest movies and one that The Goonies fans will love it. The film sees two siblings on an adventure to find treasure, while learning all about their Hawaiian heritage along the way.

The relationships between siblings and their friends are very reminiscent of The Goonies. Plus, the fact that there’s a ton of adventures throughout makes the two films similar, though Find Ohana has a modern feel, which the public will certainly appreciate.
