There have been countless fantastic films released over the past five years, including some already iconic comedy genre entries. Comedy movies tend to blend into another genre and this mix can be successful and inventive with a nice balance between genres or it can be a redundant entry into the genre.

Action, mystery, period drama, and romance have all proven to work well with the comedy genre and there’s still room to be original. Here are some of the most inventive, creative, hilarious and enjoyable comedies released over the past five years.


ten Knives Out (2019)


Knives Out is a fast-paced comedic mystery film that follows a quirky and brilliant White Detective (Daniel Craig) as he is suspiciously hired to solve a murder that at first glance looks like suicide. Blanc soon realizes that the family is full of suspicious people and that any of them could have been involved in the death of the family patriarch. The film brilliantly balances mystery and comedy with biting social commentary, making it a fantastic watch.

9 Deadpool (2016)


Ryan Reynold’s second attempt to portray “Merc with a Mouth” was a surprise success and a beloved take on the character. The R-rated film brings violence and gore, but the characters, led by Wade Wilson, bring sarcasm to every scene in the well-paced film. The film uses different types of comedy throughout; deadpan, puns, meta and is overpowered while having moments of hype. It’s a well-rounded action comedy and its sequel was just as successful.

8 The Big Sick (2017)


The big sick is based on Kumail Nanjiani’s actual relationship with Emily Gordon (played by Zoe Kazan) as they begin to date a major cultural conflict between themselves and their families, Nanjiani being of Pakistani descent and Gordon white and American.

While the film deals with serious matters as Gordon falls gravely ill and Nanjiani has to face his true feelings and face both parents, the film is surprisingly humorous amidst grief.

7 Game night (2018)


Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams are the stars of this game night gone awry that surprises like a clever and hilarious comedy. The characters start to think they are part of a nighttime abduction mystery, but it turns out everything is real and they have to survive the night. Action comedy is stylized with neat cinematography which is not always typical of the genre, and each character is used in the plot and comedy.

6 Smart Book (2019)


Booksmart follows two best friends (Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein) who realize they’ve wasted their high school years focusing only on academics and decide they need to go on a crazy party and nonsense adventure before they go at University. Olivia Wilde’s first film is a successful and hilarious character study of modern high school kids.

5 The Gentiles (2016)


The nice guys was a movie set in 1970s Los Angeles and follows two private investigators (Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe) who reluctantly team up to investigate the murder of a porn star. The two uncover a high-profile conspiracy involving the auto industry as they get closer to solving the mystery. The laughs come from the chemistry of Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe and the increasingly hilarious situations the two find themselves in.

4 Wild Hunt (2016)


Taika Waititi has met with great success as a director, including Bunny Jojo and What we do in the shadows and all of his films have the same type of comedy all over the place. While all of his films are hilarious on their own, Wild Hunt is one of his most hilarious and heartfelt movies.

Wild Hunt follows a young boy (Julian Dennison) and his hectic life through the child welfare system before finally finding some peace with a new family in the country near the outskirts of the New Zealand bush. Tragedy ensues, forcing the boy and his adopted uncle (Sam Neill) to escape into the bush by running.

3 Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)


This beautifully animated film follows a young Miles Morales who is bitten by a radioactive spider and suddenly gains superpowers similar to the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. The verses collide when multiple incarnations of Spider-Man are drawn into Miles’ world and the team must work together to defeat the villainous King Pin. It’s a fast-paced action comedy with a big uplifting message and a lot of heart.

2 Love, Simon (2018)


Love, Simon follows high school student Simon Spier as he tries to figure out how best to tell his family and friends he’s gay. Things get complicated and exciting when Simon starts talking to an anonymous student at school and starts falling in love with the classmate and constantly wondering who the other guy could be, who only goes through Blue. It’s a fun and heartfelt coming-of-age romance that also features more serious moments throughout.

1 The Personal Story of David Copperfield (2019)


Dev Patel stars in Armando Iannucci’s Charles Dickens adaptation that follows the fantasy world of David Copperfield. The fictional Copperfield becomes an author and tells the story of his life, from financial and family struggles to his happiness and success. The film is escape at its best and a delightful watch that balances comedy, romance, and period drama well.
