8 cult comedies that unfortunately failed at the box office like “Andaz Apna Apna” and “Daud”

Comedy is a tough genre to break into and it’s not every day that you witness a downright hilarious movie.

This is the reason why we see fewer films in the genre and even those that come out don’t make us laugh.

Some of the most beloved comedy films of all time include Padosan, Chupke Chupke, Dulhe Raja, Haseena Maan Jayegi, Hera Pheri, Hungama, Hulchul & Welcome among others.

Apart from being comedy classics, the aforementioned films are also successful at the box office.

However, some comedy films were box office failures upon release, but over the years have achieved cult status.

Here is a look at 8 such hilarious Bollywood films that sadly flopped at the box office:

Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983)

Directed by Kundan Shah, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro is a must-watch satirical comedy-drama for any movie buff.

Starring Naseeruddin Shah, Ravi Vaswani, Om Puri, Pankaj Kapur and Satish Shah, the film received rave reviews but was a box office flop.

Andaz Apna Apna (1994)

Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, the crazy comedy starred Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Raveena Tandon, Karisma Kapoor, Paresh Rawal and Shakti Kapoor, among others.

Often considered one of the best comedy films to come out of Indian cinema, Andaz Apna Apna was a huge box office disaster.

Daoud (1997)

Now it’s a crazy, mad cop comedy from former genius Ram Gopal Varma. The dark comedy is a round of laughs from start to finish, especially the parts involving Neeraj Vora’s Chacko.

The film starred Sanjay Dutt, Urmila Matondkar, Paresh Rawal, Manoj Bajpayee, Ashish Vidyarthi and Neera Vora.

If you haven’t watched the movie, you should. Highly recommended.

If a movie stars Govinda in the lead role, chances are it’ll default to a fun watch, regardless of its box office status.

This comedy film directed by Harmesh Malhotra, who last delivered a cult hit in Dulhe Raja starring Govinda, Raveena Tandon, Johny Lever and Kader Khan is a worthy follow-up and is a satellite hit.

Watch out for scenes featuring Govinda’s Bobdeya Dada, Kader Khan’s Topichand Bhangari, and Razzak Khan’s Takkar Pehelwan.

Directed by Anees Bazmee who recently achieved huge success in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, Sandwich may have suffered due to delayed release.

Starring Govinda in a dual role, the film also starred Raveena Tandon and Mahima Chaudhary.

Interestingly, it is also one of Aamir Khan’s favorite movies who claimed to have watched it 10-12 times.

Sunday (2008)

The last time Rohit Shetty delivered a box office flop was in 2008 and the film was Sunday with Ajay Devgn, Arshad Warsi, Irrfan Khan and Ayesha Takia.

The mystery comedy actually had a lot of funny moments and the highlight was the banter between Arshad, Irrfan and Ajay. If not for nothing, watch it for Irrfan’s hilarious act as a struggling actor.
