Rurouni Kenshin: the beginning, the second and last part of the “Final Chapter” series inspired by Nobuhiro Watsuki’s action manga jidaigeki, grossed 363 million yen ($ 3.31 million) out of 247,600 admissions in its first Saturday and Sunday, 500 million yen ($ 4.57 million) over 350,000 admissions in its first three days, becoming the June 5-6 weekend film debut in Japan.
After in second was Rurouni Kenshin: the final, the first installment in the two-part series, which finally reached No. 1 at the Japanese box office last weekend. The film made 190 million yen ($ 1.73 million) for 73,000 admissions in its seventh weekend, bringing its national total to 3.4 billion yen ($ 31 million). According to the official Twitter of the film, this is the first time in the history of Japanese cinema that the two films of the same series have dominated the first and second place at the box office.
In its eighth weekend, the 24th feature film in the Detective Conan anime franchise Meitantei Conan: Hiiro no Dangan / Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet ranked third, one position higher than the previous weekend. The film grossed 6.7 billion yen (61.23 million USD) out of 4.83 million admissions.
It is set to become the third highest grossing film in the Conan anime franchise soon, overtaking the 21st film. The Crimson Love Letterdomestic gross of 6.89 billion yen (63 million USD). However, it seems impossible to hit the box office record of 9.18 billion yen (84 million USD) set by the second highest grossing film, Zero the Executor in 2018.
Kakegurui: Russian roulette Zettai Zetsumei (Kakegurui The Movie: Russian roulette in dire straits), the second live-action movie inspired by Homura Kawamoto (story) and Toru Naomura (art) from the game-themed manga Kakegurui, released in 218 theaters in Japan on June 1, 2021, and debuted in eighth place. The first film released in May 2019 placed sixth on its opening weekend.
Fate / Grand Order the Movie Divine Kingdom of the Round Table: Camelot – Paladin; Agateram, the second part of the animated film project based on the Destiny / Grand Order RPG smartphone, retained its same 10th position in its fourth weekend. During this time, Evangelion: 3.0 + 1.0 Once upon a time three times finally disappeared from the top 10 box office on its 13th weekend. The film’s domestic gross has reached 8.67 billion yen ($ 79.25 million) for 5.67 million admissions in 91 days since its release in Japan on March 8, 2021.
