Holly Hill Airport lands at Outer Banks; Netflix Teen Drama Movies In Region | Local

HOLLY HILL — The Holly Hill area hosted a popular Netflix teen drama on Tuesday, with the “Outer Banks” crew filming at Larry Gardner Field at Holly Hill Airport.

“Every exposure we can get is awesome!” said Holly Hill Mayor Billy Chavis.

Crews were working at the airport from early morning until late at night on Tuesday.

They were filming the third season of “Outer Banks”, a reference to the barrier islands of North Carolina.

Each episode of Outer Banks centers around the storyline: “On an island of haves and have-nots, teenage John B. enlists his three best friends in search of a legendary treasure tied to his father’s disappearance”, according to its official description on the Netflix website.

The first season of the series aired in 2020. It stars Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, and Madison Bailey, among others. It is created by Josh Pate, Jonas Pate and Shannon Burke.

Harrison Katz, assistant to producer Carole Peterman of Narrow Isle Productions, said the Holly Hill location best matched the writers’ descriptions.

“We take what’s on the script and try to find places that match what the writers are writing,” Katz said.

“And that’s how we landed on that one,” he said of Holly Hill.

What drew administrators to the airport and the grounds was the grassy airstrip lined with trees on both sides, Katz said.

During Tuesday’s shoot, a Skyvan aircraft was featured, Katz said.

It was difficult to reserve the plane for filming opportunities, he said.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the Short Brothers SC-7-3A model built in 1982 is the only model registered in the United States.

It is a twin-engine fixed-wing aircraft that can accommodate 20 people.

The Skyvan is known for its boxy build.

Katz said the script called for a 1970s-style Skyvan.

He noted that airplanes are often associated with skydiving, military uses, and cargo transportation.

Early Monday morning, Kimmie Stewart Casting, the agency responsible for hiring additional actors for Outer Banks, posted on social media that it was looking for people for the roles of a South American worker (Latino men aged 25 years and older) and South American residents (Latin Americans of any gender aged 18 and older).

The grassy parking lot in front of the Solid Rock International Ministries Church, located at 9007 Old State Road, just outside the city limits, was full of cars, trucks and RVs for the cast and crew all Tuesday day.

Vans transported the cast and crew to and from the airport, a short distance away, throughout the day and night on Tuesday.

Chavis said he appreciated the kindness of the church pastor, Bishop Donald Howell.

A month ago, Carolina Film Alliance President Linda Lee traveled to Holly Hill “to scout” for possible movie taping locations, Chavis said. Then last Thursday, the CFA called to say they needed the city’s help.

Chavis said the city moved quickly to settle the legal details in time for filming earlier this week.

He said there were about 120 to 130 crew members on hand for Tuesday’s shoot.
